Two-Phase Treatment Q & A

What is a two-phase treatment?

Two-phase treatment is an orthodontic subspecialty that addresses alignment problems in children and teens. It uses a specialized process that focuses on two areas –– tooth straightening and physical changes (such as jaw growth).

Enrolling your child in two-phase orthodontic treatment can help them achieve a healthy, functional, and beautiful smile while reducing the risk of potential problems in the future.

What types of alignment problems can two-phase treatment correct?

At Amazing Smiles Orthodontics, Dr. Yusupov uses two-phase treatment to correct various alignment problems, including:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Crowding
  • Overlapping teeth
  • Impacted teeth
  • Narrow upper jaw
  • Spaces between the teeth
  • Misaligned jaw

Your child might also benefit from two-phase orthodontic treatment if they have a bite abnormality, like crossbite, overbite, or underbite.

How does two-phase orthodontic treatment work?

At Amazing Smiles Orthodontics, Dr. Yusupov tailors two-phase orthodontic treatment to each child’s needs. Even so, the procedure follows the same basic outline:

Phase one of the treatment

The goal of phase one treatment is to help your child’s jaw grow in a way that will accommodate all of their permanent teeth. Dr. Yusupov can identify potential problems, like a narrow upper jaw, for example, at an early age. He then uses that information to plan for your child’s future.

Dr. Yusupov might place spacers or other orthodontic treatment devices to prepare your child for braces or invisible aligners, depending on their needs.

Resting phase

During this phase of treatment, Dr. Yusupov waits for your child’s permanent teeth to break through the gumline. If your child has impacted teeth (teeth blocked by bone), he might recommend extractions.

Phase two of the treatment

When your child has all of their permanent teeth, Dr. Yusupov moves to the second phase of orthodontic treatment.

During the second phase of treatment, he prescribes braces or invisible aligners. Your child wears braces or aligners for a year or more. Over time, the orthodontic appliances put mild pressure on your child’s teeth and jaw, improving their alignment and position.

How long does two-phase orthodontic treatment take?

The time that two-phase orthodontic treatment takes depends on your child’s age, the alignment problems addressed, and their commitment to Dr. Yusupov’s care plan.

Most children complete treatment in 24-30 months*, but it may take longer. Attend each of your child’s visits and encourage them to follow Dr. Yusupov’s instructions as prescribed.
