The Popularity of Braces for Kids

Braces can come in a world of different colors and that means each year a new popular color surfaces as the favorite for that year. The most popular colors of braces bands are shades of pink, orange red, green, blue, yellow, and purple.

Braces can come in a world of different colors and that means each year a new popular color surfaces as the favorite for that year. The most popular colors of braces bands are shades of pink, orange red, green, blue, yellow, and purple. Your orthodontist can help you pick the right colors for you. Choose best braces colors for boys and best color for braces girl.

Here are some suggestions when choosing which colored braces will fit a patient:

  • Pick a color at random to experiment: Pick a color that you would like to try out! Or choose more than one color, like a rainbow!
  • Match favorite outfits: Take a look at what colors appear most in your closet and then pick a braces color that best complements your style! To play it safe you can pick a neutral color that closely matches your teeth, so it can go with any outfit or occasion.
  • Favorite time of year (season or holidays): Patrick’s Day, Fourth of July, Christmas, etc. Its fun to have your braces match upcoming holidays. Also, your braces color could bring a stylish look to any special occasions like weddings and graduations.
  • Favorite colors: Put your favorite colors on display with your braces!
  • Colors that complement your eyes or features: Green bands on braces would best complement brown eyes. Blue, pink, and lilac complement blue eyes; while purple, red, green, and orange intensify green eyes.
  • Clear is an option! – If you don’t want to make a statement with your braces, Invisalign clear aligners may be the right choice for you. Ask Dr. Murray if he thinks clear braces would be a good fit.

AT WHAT AGE CAN CHILDREN HAVE ORTHODONTIC BRACES?

Although braces can straighten teeth at any age, they are usually more effective on children whose bones are still growing and forming. Treatment often begins once most adult teeth have come through, so around age 10-14.

However, some children start treatment as early as age 7 or 8 if there is a medical reason to do so. A lot depends on the type of problem they have and how their adult teeth are coming through. As a matter of fact, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that a child should receive their first consultation at the age of 7.

Early treatment can help:

  • Guide growth of the jaw bone
  • Move teeth into the correct position as they emerge
  • Reduce the risk of injury to prominent teeth
  • Make space for teeth coming through
  • Lower the chances of teeth becoming impacted under gums
  • Improve facial esthetics

TYPES OF BRACES FOR KIDS

The types of braces available for children are much the same as those used for adult orthodontics, although some have special features for kids.

CERAMIC (CLEAR AND TOOTH-COLORED)

These braces function in much the same way as metal ones, but the materials used make them less noticeable. The ceramic clear brackets come in a clear or tooth-colored material so they blend in better with the teeth. The wire is still usually metal, although it can have a tooth-colored coating.

The materials used in these braces mean they usually cost more than metal, but they could be a good choice for children who are feeling very self-conscious about their orthodontic treatment.

LINGUAL

Lingual braces use metal brackets and wires but are tucked out of sight behind the teeth, next to the tongue. This positioning makes it very hard to spot them, so they are another good choice for children who are afraid of being bullied because of their braces.

Another benefit is that any staining which occurs as a result of poor oral hygiene will be hidden on the back of the teeth.

However, treatment with lingual braces typically takes longer than with those attached to the front of teeth. They are also generally the most expensive option and aren’t suitable for children with particularly small teeth.

METAL & INVISALIGN

These two can be options for children as well, but it will be up to the orthodontist and the parents when it comes to which braces will be the best option of all choices.

The Era Of Selfies. Invisalign For Teens Can Help

The Confidence Boost: Invisalign Teen Clear Aligners

In this age of “the selfie,” it’s no surprise to anyone that looking good isn’t just for celebrities anymore. Whether it’s via Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn or your choice of social media, most people have an Internet presence these days…

In this age of “the selfie,” it’s no surprise to anyone that looking good isn’t just for celebrities anymore. Whether it’s via Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn or your choice of social media, most people have an Internet presence these days— compounding their desire to look their very best. And while looking great has become increasingly important for people of all ages, it seems that teens, especially, are in the spotlight.

We treat each patient’s case on an individual basis, recognizing that the best dental care begins with communication. First we listen to our patient; then we provide caring responses; and finally we work together, with the patient, to form an individualized dental plan that is right for them.

In fact, a new Teen Confidence survey conducted by Kelton and commissioned by the makers of Invisalign Teen® clear aligners has uncovered some dramatic statistics— including the fact that 40 percent of social-media using teens feel that their appearance is judged more closely on social media, with 56 percent indicating that they worry about their looks most days. And when it comes to looking good and feeling confident, it seems that one’s smile plays a key role:

–> 96% of US teens who are not satisfied with their smile are insecure about their appearance overall.

–> 30% of US teens who are not satisfied with their appearance are most self-conscious about their teeth.

–> 47% of those who post selfies on social media first consider whether their smile “looks good.”

Traditional braces can exacerbate the problem

The study additionally reveals that:

–> 92% of US teens who have never worn metal braces say that wearing brackets would keep them from fitting in.

–> 25% believe they would be teased.

–> 41% say it is “embarrassing” for most teens to wear metal braces.

Invisalign Clear aligners to the rescue

Ultimately, of course, accepting—even embracing– one’s unique appearance and inner beauty is what will keep you happy and sane throughout life. With that said, however, if there is something you can do to improve your appearance and will give you a boost of confidence and self-esteem, why not? For many teens the answer, increasingly, is Invisalign Clear Aligners. A solid 47% of Invisalign teen users surveyed said they had a “boost” in self esteem even during the treatment process; and only 8% said that wearing Invisalign would be “embarrassing.” And that’s no wonder.

Invisalign and Invisalign Teen aligners use a series of virtually invisible and removable aligners that gradually move teeth over time. Users have no food restrictions, no interference with sports or other activities, and teeth get straightened without most people even knowing they are in treatment.

The Best 10 Ways to Clean Your Retainer in 2022

Effective Retainer Cleaning Tips for 2022

It may come as a shock that many individuals go for long stretches of time without effectively cleaning their retainer. While it’s easy to remember to brush our teeth twice a day, retainers tend to be forgotten about.

It may come as a shock that many individuals go for long stretches of time without effectively cleaning their retainer. While it’s easy to remember to brush our teeth twice a day, retainers tend to be forgotten about. However, we have put a list together of the best 10 years to clean your retainer for the 2022 year.

LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT THE TOP 10 WAYS AVAILABLE TO CLEAN YOUR RETAINER:

  • Take out the retainer when preparing to eat food or drink beverages that are known to stain teeth. This step can aid in keeping a retainer clean. This will also allow the individual to remember to clean their retainer before putting it back in place.
  • You can effectively clean your mouth gear using basic tools you likely already have around your home. Each morning, use a soft-bristle toothbrush to give your guard or retainer a gentle scrubbing like you would your own teeth. The only thing you need is lukewarm water.
  • Brush your teeth before putting the retainer back in. This can help to maintain the bacteria growth that happens after eating.
  • Patients can ask about retainer cleaner to safely soak their retainer. Some retainers need water to keep their structure.
  • Know what the signs are when a retainer needs cleaning, such as: Is there film on the retainer, does your retainer look cloudy, or are there white spots on the retainer? If the answer is yes, then this retainer needs a deep clean.

Knowing when a retainer needs a thorough cleaning will help to ward off any bad breath or infections. This is a huge preventative step!

  • When a patient is not wearing their retainer, the retainer should always be kept in the case. A retainer case is vital to keeping any retainer safe and intact. It prevents the retainer from being crushed or thrown away accidentally. It also keeps it clean from outside-of-the-mouth dirt and debris. Always gently clean the retainer before placing it back into the case.

  • Make sure to deep clean a retainer at least once per week. A deeper weekly clean is a great way to keep your retainer looking very new, and it will help kill harmful bacteria that cause bad breath and illness. Plus, it breaks up plaque and tartar that may have missed during the week with daily cleanings.
  • Avoid using toothpaste or any abrasive cleaning product that can damage your clear retainer. Instead, try soaking the clear plastic retainer in lukewarm water and ask the orthodontist what type of mild and gentle cleaner to use.
  • A Hawley retainer will often accumulate plaque and food debris on the acrylic palate portion of the retainer. It is important to keep it clean to avoid damage over time and prevent bad breath. Now with the Hawley retainer it can be soaked in denture cleaner overnight to maintain a deep clean to the product.
  • Mixing baking soda with water can create a great cleaner that won’t harm or crack your retainer. Be sure to check out Steraligner which is a product that deep cleans the the aligner tray.

There are natural remedies for cleaning retainers that include mixtures of baking soda with water. To create a paste to softly brush throughout the retainer. Or using white vinegar that can be used as a disinfectant to clean out the bacteria that may be residing in your retainer.

However, before going to grab the white vinegar, simply ask your orthodontist what the best method to follow should be to keep your retainer smelling and looking clean.

ASK YOUR ORTHODONTIST ABOUT THESE RETAINER CLEANSERS:

  • Retainer Brite Cleaning Tablets
  • M3 Naturals Retainer Cleaner in Mint
  • Fresh Guard Soak
  • Retainer UV Cleaning Cases

Teeth Straightening Retainers: Why You May Need One

Teeth retainers play an essential role in keeping teeth straight and healthy long-term. They maintain the position of teeth after orthodontic treatment and allow the bone holding the person’s teeth in place to heal.

Teeth retainers play an essential role in keeping teeth straight and healthy long-term. They maintain the position of teeth after orthodontic treatment and allow the bone holding the person’s teeth in place to heal. However, who can tell if they need a retainer or not?

WHAT PATIENTS WEAR RETAINERS, AND WHY?

Patients who have had their teeth aligned with braces use retainers. This is typically the final phase of orthodontic teeth straightening procedures and ensures that teeth stay in their new position. However, patients should listen to their professional orthodontist about the longevity involved and how many hours per day are needed to wear a retainer.

Although some patients may believe that orthodontic work is complete when braces come off, wearing retainers for the prescribed amount of time is essential. Not following the guidance of one’s dentist or orthodontist could undo the work of their braces.

Once a patient has a retainer, they will regularly return to their orthodontist for checkups. The orthodontist will make any necessary adjustments, such as bending or trimming wires for comfort.

D.I.Y. RETAINERS IS NOT THE RIGHT WAY

A big outcome of 2021 is the D.I.Y. health movement. While some things are perfectly okay to create and make at home, a retainer should strictly be prescribed by a professional orthodontist.

D.I.Y. retainers can easily mess up the corrected work that was fixed by wearing braces beforehand, no patient wants to ruin their previous teeth straightening process.

IT IS ALWAYS IMPORTANT TO FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS

The length of time a patient wears a retainer depends on their specific course of treatment and complexity. At times, an orthodontist will attach a permanent retainer to a patient’s teeth. They may leave this in place indefinitely, or they may replace it with a removable retainer after a period of time. But the patient should not remove their retainer for a long duration if they have been advised to not do so by their orthodontist.

Alternatively, orthodontists may decide to give a patient a removable retainer. Orthodontists may suggest that an individual wears that removable retainer almost 24 hours per day for the first 4–6 months. It just depends on the patient’s situation.

However, many orthodontists recommend that people wear their removable retainer at all times for at least 9 months. Following the initial period of constant wear, a patient may use their retainer only at night. A patient’s orthodontist will tell them how long to wear their retainer. This will likely be for 12 months or longer.

SOME ADVICE FROM DR. AZARIY YUSUPOV ABOUT RETAINERS

  • “Take your retainers out only when eating… and always put retainers in their case! Most appliances are lost in school lunchrooms or restaurants. NEVER wrap the retainer in a napkin or tissue, as they may be thrown away. If you put them in your pocket, they will break when you sit down. Also, Pets love to chew on them, so keep them out of reach!”
  • “Retainers are breakable, so treat them with care. If retainers are lost or broken, call us immediately.”
  • “Keep retainers away from hot water, hot car dashboards, pockets, the washing machine, and napkins.”
  • “Always bring your retainers to your appointments.”

No matter what, always consult an orthodontist’s professional experience first, instead of self-diagnosing what the complexity might be.

Teens, Social Media And Straight Teeth

Influence Of Social Media On Teenagers And Their Self-esteem

Here’s a question for all of the parents out there: What is the right age for your child to have a smart phone? And then, a smart phone stocked up with all of the social media apps?

It seems to me that the age to engage in social media is getting younger and younger. And with it has come increasing pressure to look good. A colleague recently told me that the average teen posts about 17 selfies per month. Oy!

And what does this have to do with orthodontics? Well, I’m here to tell you that all of this means that the street value of a great smile keeps increasing. Straight teeth and a killer smile rank high on the list for looking good on Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, etc,. Even in real life, straight teeth and a great smile is useful (said with a hint of sarcasm). So get with it parents! Straight teeth helps teens feel confident and comfortable in a world where, increasingly, your smile is your social media signature.

Don’t take my word for it either.

A recent Teen Confidence survey conducted by Kelton and commissioned by the makers of Invisalign Teen® clear aligners has uncovered some dramatic statistics including this one: 70% of teens surveyed are not happy with their current smile. This is particularly true of those in the 13-14 age range than in 15-17 segment.

What to do?

Fortunately teens have several options nowadays, with the two primary choices involving metal braces or Invisalign Teen® clear aligners. And between those two choices, there is a growing momentum to go “clear.” In fact the study also reveals that 81% of current wearers of Invisalign are satisfied with the look of their teeth vs 68% of those currently wearing metal braces.

Spacers for Braces: What Are They and Do The Hurt?

For people with crooked or misaligned teeth, orthodontic braces are a great solution for straightening them out. And though most of us are familiar with what braces are, many don’t know that braces function properly with the help of spacers for braces.

SPACERS FOR BRACES: WHAT ARE THEY AND WHAT TO EXPECT

For people with crooked or misaligned teeth, orthodontic braces are a great solution for straightening them out. And though most of us are familiar with what braces are, many don’t know that braces function properly with the help of spacers for braces.

Understanding intricacies like spacers can help you obtain a transparent picture of the procedure involved with getting braces. And that can make the whole process a little less daunting.

The main reason spacers are needed is to allow some space between the teeth. This helps the orthodontic bands to be placed on the teeth or within the space to help align crooked teeth.

We will cover common questions that come up when patients ask about spacers for braces.

WHAT DO SPACERS DO FOR YOUR TEETH?

First off, there are two different kinds of spacers, metal and rubber. The rubber spacers are small elastic loops that slide between two back teeth. Metal spacers are small metal rings that are inserted between two back teeth.

DO SPACERS CAUSE ANY PAIN?

Now, spacers for braces can cause discomfort. This is because a small object is being placed in-between the small space that connects teeth. For people with relatively small or no space between their teeth, braces spacers can cause irritation in the nerves which may result in constant, but bearable pain.

The discomfort can subside after wearing spacers for a bit of time. The pain or discomfort also happens based on the sensitivity of the individual’s mouth.

CAN SPACERS FALL OUT?

As long as you are following the directions of your orthodontist, the spacers should stay in place. If a spacer does fall out, schedule an appointment with your orthodontist immediately. Do not under any circumstance try and place the spacer back in place, this will just cause added pain and should be replaced by a professional.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I EAT WITH SPACERS IN PLACE?

Discomfort could start to take place, if chewy or hard foods are being consumed. However, any discomfort can be minimized by drinking cold drinks, eating ice cream, and taking over-the-counter pain-relievers as prescribed.

PATIENTS SHOULD ONLY EAT THESE TYPES OF FOODS:

  • Yogurt
  • Oatmeal
  • Applesauce
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Smoothies (blend in fruit and veggies for a healthy, soft meal)
  • Protein shakes
  • Soup
  • Steamed veggies, chopped into small pieces
  • Meat cut off the bone in small pieces

Spacers for braces are meant to help fix any issues that have been created by misaligned teeth. Patient’s should always consult with their orthodontist first, before coming to the conclusion that they need braces.

WHAT ARE INVISALIGN ATTACHMENTS?

After the orthodontist installs your braces, you may experience some pain and soreness in your teeth and gums for a few hours following the procedure. The soreness can last up to a week and results from pressure from chewing and sometimes cuts on the tongue from running it across the braces.

Wearing Invisalign braces take 6-24 months depending on treatment complexity. You occasionally visit your dentist during the period to get aligner adjustments. After these adjustments, it’s common to experience discomfort for a few days.

CAN YOU USE ORTHODONTIC WAX FOR INVISALIGN?

Dental wax is most commonly used for metal braces as it helps protect your gums from the metal edges of your braces. However, many individuals choose to use dental wax for aligners to alleviate irritation or abrasions resulting from the tray’s surface rubbing up against your gums and tongue. Orthodontic wax is natural and safe to use as a brace barrier when wearing Invisalign.

Whether you’re using dental wax for aligners or metal braces, orthodontists recommend changing the wax every day and even sooner if it starts to detach. Keeping orthodontic wax in your mouth for more than a day increases the risk of bacteria and cavities.

Here are other ways patients wearing Invisalign for the first time can reduce irritation and discomfort.

ADVIL

Also known as Motrin or Ibuprofen, Advil is considered a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).

Advil is an over-the-counter pain reliever that is helpful in the first 12-24 hours of wearing a new set of Invisalign aligners. Advil provides relief for about 6-8 hours for traditional metal braces.

Patients experiencing pain and discomfort when changing clear aligners can use this anti-inflammatory medication to help reduce the inflammation and swelling that may happen in the gums when the Invisalign press against the teeth.

EMERY BOARD

These are small flat boards that have emery paper glued to them. They are often used to refine nails; Invisalign patients use them to smoothen the rough edges of new Invisalign.

To file the edges on your aligners, orthodontists recommend you hold the emery board at a 45-degree angle from the edge where it’s bothering and file back & forth unit it’s smooth.

BIOTENE & XYLIMENTS

Biotene is a mouth spray used to prevent tooth decay, cavities, and gum disease; Xyliments are synthetic forms of mucus secretions produced in the mouth and help relieve the pain and dryness in the throat or mouth.

Invisalign patients involved in public speaking like lectures or business meetings may need Biotene & Xyliments to moisturize the mouth from irritation.

CANKER-X

Canker sores are small shallow ulcers occurring in the mouth lining that often can get triggered by minor injuries, acid fruits, or hot spicy foods.

Canker-X is a non-prescription product with no alcohol or benzocaine that helps the mouth heal from canker sores caused by clear aligners.

Patients wearing Invisalign can use Canker-X to coat the sores preventing discomfort and irritation.

HOW DO YOU USE DENTAL WAX ON CLEAR ALIGNERS?

Dental wax typically comes from natural waxes like carnauba wax or beeswax. Some contain ingredients for flavor and texture.

When inserting wax for Invisalign braces, follow these steps:

  • Wash your hands
  • Brush your teeth
  • Take a small piece of dental wax
  • Squeeze it until it’s a small ball and flatten it.
  • Then gently push the wax onto the problem area of the braces. You can use your tongue to adjust the wax.

CHEWIES FOR INVISALIGN

Invisalign chewies are devices that patients chew to close air bubbles between the clear aligners and teeth. The patient bites down on a chewie and chews for 5-10 minutes while shifting it around in the mouth to fit the aligners with the teeth.

Another alternative is a clean paper towel, which you can roll to the thickness of your pinky finger, then chew for a few minutes before disposal.

DOES ORTHODONTIC WAX DISSOLVE?

Orthodontic wax wears out over time. You can always apply another layer of dental wax if the Invisalign aligners continue to irritate your mouth. It’s also safe to swallow the wax.

CAN YOU SLEEP WITH ORTHODONTIC WAX?

You can wear orthodontic wax during sleep, more so when you face down; it’s okay if your swallow some wax as it’s non-toxic.

Recommendations for Taking Care of Retainers

Dr. Yusupov has some basic recommendations for taking care of your retainers for Cedarhurst, Forest Hills and Brooklyn residents. Once you have done the hard work of straightening your teeth, the next phase of your orthodontic treatment begins…

Dr. Yusupov has some basic recommendations for taking care of your retainers for Cedarhurst, Forest Hills and Brooklyn residents. Once you have done the hard work of straightening your teeth, the next phase of your orthodontic treatment begins:

Keeping your teeth aligned with a retainer! You don’t want anything holding you back after taking the time to get them straightened. It will allow bone tissue to rebuild around the teeth and keep the teeth from shifting when you bite, chew, swallow and speak.

Whether your removable retainer is made of acrylic or clear plastic, it will need care and protection. That is if you want to keep your teeth in the aligned position your orthodontic journey left them. If you have a fixed retainer, this is typically a metal wire bonded to the back of your front teeth that never comes off. You will be wearing your retainer at night while you sleep and need to keep it clean when it’s not in your mouth.

RETAINER CARE

Wear It As Often As Possible

This simple step can’t be overemphasized. Wearing your retainer is the only thing that will keep your teeth from shifting back into their pre-treatment, unaligned position. Whether you need to wear it all day or just at night, be sure you follow our orthodontist’s instructions.

Keep It Clean

It’s not just your pearly whites that need cleaning; your retainer needs to be germ- and bacteria-free! You can brush it with your soft-bristled toothbrush when you brush and floss your teeth. Cleaning solutions to rinse or soak the retainer can be done using a denture-cleaning tablet. If you have any questions, check with our team for specifics.

Take It Out Before Eating

You will need to wear your removable retainer as prescribed, except when you eat. Retainers are not made for chewing (unless they are permanent). This allows you to eat your favorite foods without harming the appliance and keep oral debris from hiding behind your retainer and getting stuck there.

Protect It

Keep your removable retainer in its container when it’s not in your mouth. You don’t want to lose it (that’s expensive), nor do you want to accidentally throw it away after eating out, or putting it someplace where it will pick up germs and bacteria, like letting your dog chew it.

Avoid Heat

Because of the material, an acrylic or plastic retainer can be warped or damaged by high heat. That means cleaning it with warm – not hot – water. Do not clean it in boiling water, the dishwasher, microwave, washing machine, dryer, or leave it in the car on a hot day.

Wear a Sports Guard

Don’t wear your retainer when you’re playing contact or high impact sports. Wear a sports guard to protect your teeth and oral tissues. Just be sure to put your retainer back on after playing.

Permanent and Removable – Which Dental Retainer Is Suitable For You?
