AT WHAT AGE CAN CHILDREN HAVE ORTHODONTIC BRACES?

Although braces can straighten teeth at any age, they are usually more effective on children whose bones are still growing and forming. Treatment often begins once most adult teeth have come through, so around age 10-14.

However, some children start treatment as early as age 7 or 8 if there is a medical reason to do so. A lot depends on the type of problem they have and how their adult teeth are coming through. As a matter of fact, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that a child should receive their first consultation at the age of 7.

Early treatment can help:

• Guide growth of the jaw bone
• Move teeth into the correct position as they emerge
• Reduce the risk of injury to prominent teeth
• Make space for teeth coming through
• Lower the chances of teeth becoming impacted under gums

TYPES OF BRACES FOR KIDS

The types of braces available for children are much the same as those used for adult orthodontics, although some have special features for kids.

CERAMIC (CLEAR AND TOOTH-COLORED)

These braces function in much the same way as metal ones, but the materials used make them less noticeable. The ceramic clear brackets come in a clear or tooth-colored material so they blend in better with the teeth. The wire is still usually metal, although it can have a tooth-colored coating.

The materials used in these braces mean they usually cost more than metal, but they could be a good choice for children who are feeling very self-conscious about their orthodontic treatment.

LINGUAL

Lingual braces use metal brackets and wires but are tucked out of sight behind the teeth, next to the tongue. This positioning makes it very hard to spot them, so they are another good choice for children who are afraid of being bullied because of their braces.

Another benefit is that any staining which occurs as a result of poor oral hygiene will be hidden on the back of the teeth.

However, treatment with lingual braces typically takes longer than with those attached to the front of teeth. They are also generally the most expensive option and aren’t suitable for children with particularly small teeth.

Teeth retainers play an essential role in keeping teeth straight and healthy long-term. They maintain the position of teeth after orthodontic treatment and allow the bone holding the person’s teeth in place to heal. However, who can tell if they need a retainer or not?

WHAT PATIENTS WEAR RETAINERS, AND WHY?

Patients who have had their teeth aligned with braces use retainers. This is typically the final phase of orthodontic teeth straightening procedures and ensures that teeth stay in their new position. However, patients should listen to their professional orthodontist about the longevity involved and how many hours per day are needed to wear a retainer.

Although some patients may believe that orthodontic work is complete when braces come off, wearing retainers for the prescribed amount of time is essential. Not following the guidance of one’s dentist or orthodontist could undo the work of their braces.

Once a patient has a retainer, they will regularly return to their orthodontist for checkups. The orthodontist will make any necessary adjustments, such as bending or trimming wires for comfort.

D.I.Y. RETAINERS IS NOT THE RIGHT WAY

A big outcome of 2021 is the D.I.Y. health movement. While some things are perfectly okay to create and make at home, a retainer should strictly be prescribed by a professional orthodontist.

D.I.Y. retainers can easily mess up the corrected work that was fixed by wearing braces beforehand, no patient wants to ruin their previous teeth straightening process.

SPACERS FOR BRACES: WHAT ARE THEY AND WHAT TO EXPECT

For people with crooked or misaligned teeth, orthodontic braces are a great solution for straightening them out. And though most of us are familiar with what braces are, many don’t know that braces function properly with the help of spacers for braces.

Understanding intricacies like spacers can help you obtain a transparent picture of the procedure involved with getting braces. And that can make the whole process a little less daunting.

The main reason spacers are needed is to allow some space between the teeth. This helps the orthodontic bands to be placed on the teeth or within the space to help align crooked teeth.

We will cover common questions that come up when patients ask about spacers for braces.

WHAT DO SPACERS DO FOR YOUR TEETH?

First off, there are two different kinds of spacers, metal and rubber. The rubber spacers are small elastic loops that slide between two back teeth. Metal spacers are small metal rings that are inserted between two back teeth.

DO SPACERS CAUSE ANY PAIN?

Now, spacers for braces can cause discomfort. This is because a small object is being placed in-between the small space that connects teeth. For people with relatively small or no space between their teeth, braces spacers can cause irritation in the nerves which may result in constant, but bearable pain.

The discomfort can subside after wearing spacers for a bit of time. The pain or discomfort also happens based on the sensitivity of the individual’s mouth.

CAN SPACERS FALL OUT?

As long as you are following the directions of your orthodontist, the spacers should stay in place. If a spacer does fall out, schedule an appointment with your orthodontist immediately. Do not under any circumstance try and place the spacer back in place, this will just cause added pain and should be replaced by a professional.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I EAT WITH SPACERS IN PLACE?

Discomfort could start to take place, if chewy or hard foods are being consumed. However, any discomfort can be minimized by drinking cold drinks, eating ice cream, and taking over-the-counter pain-relievers as prescribed.

After the orthodontist installs your braces, you may experience some pain and soreness in your teeth and gums for a few hours following the procedure. The soreness can last up to a week and results from pressure from chewing and sometimes cuts on the tongue from running it across the braces.

Wearing Invisalign braces take 6-24 months depending on treatment complexity. You occasionally visit your dentist during the period to get aligner adjustments. After these adjustments, it’s common to experience discomfort for a few days.

CAN YOU USE ORTHODONTIC WAX FOR INVISALIGN?

Dental wax is most commonly used for metal braces as it helps protect your gums from the metal edges of your braces. However, many individuals choose to use dental wax for aligners to alleviate irritation or abrasions resulting from the tray’s surface rubbing up against your gums and tongue. Orthodontic wax is natural and safe to use as a brace barrier when wearing Invisalign.

Whether you’re using dental wax for aligners or metal braces, orthodontists recommend changing the wax every day and even sooner if it starts to detach. Keeping orthodontic wax in your mouth for more than a day increases the risk of bacteria and cavities.

Here are other ways patients wearing Invisalign for the first time can reduce irritation and discomfort.

ADVIL

Also known as Motrin or Ibuprofen, Advil is considered a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).

Advil is an over-the-counter pain reliever that is helpful in the first 12-24 hours of wearing a new set of Invisalign aligners. Advil provides relief for about 6-8 hours for traditional metal braces.

Patients experiencing pain and discomfort when changing clear aligners can use this anti-inflammatory medication to help reduce the inflammation and swelling that may happen in the gums when the Invisalign press against the teeth.

EMERY BOARD

These are small flat boards that have emery paper glued to them. They are often used to refine nails; Invisalign patients use them to smoothen the rough edges of new Invisalign.

To file the edges on your aligners, orthodontists recommend you hold the emery board at a 45-degree angle from the edge where it’s bothering and file back & forth unit it’s smooth.

BIOTENE & XYLIMENTS

Biotene is a mouth spray used to prevent tooth decay, cavities, and gum disease; Xyliments are synthetic forms of mucus secretions produced in the mouth and help relieve the pain and dryness in the throat or mouth.

Invisalign patients involved in public speaking like lectures or business meetings may need Biotene & Xyliments to moisturize the mouth from irritation.

CANKER-X

Canker sores are small shallow ulcers occurring in the mouth lining that often can get triggered by minor injuries, acid fruits, or hot spicy foods.

Canker-X is a non-prescription product with no alcohol or benzocaine that helps the mouth heal from canker sores caused by clear aligners.

Patients wearing Invisalign can use Canker-X to coat the sores preventing discomfort and irritation.

HOW DO YOU USE DENTAL WAX ON CLEAR ALIGNERS?

Dental wax typically comes from natural waxes like carnauba wax or beeswax. Some contain ingredients for flavor and texture.

When inserting wax for Invisalign braces, follow these steps:

• Wash your hands
• Brush your teeth
• Take a small piece of dental wax
• Squeeze it until it’s a small ball and flatten it.
• Then gently push the wax onto the problem area of the braces. You can use your tongue to adjust the wax.

CHEWIES FOR INVISALIGN

Invisalign chewies are devices that patients chew to close air bubbles between the clear aligners and teeth. The patient bites down on a chewie and chews for 5-10 minutes while shifting it around in the mouth to fit the aligners with the teeth.

Another alternative is a clean paper towel, which you can roll to the thickness of your pinky finger, then chew for a few minutes before disposal.

DOES ORTHODONTIC WAX DISSOLVE?

Orthodontic wax wears out over time. You can always apply another layer of dental wax if the Invisalign aligners continue to irritate your mouth. It’s also safe to swallow the wax.

CAN YOU SLEEP WITH ORTHODONTIC WAX?

You can wear orthodontic wax during sleep, more so when you face down; it’s okay if your swallow some wax as it’s non-toxic.
