I’m always amazed when patients under 20 come into my office and ask “if getting braces is going to hurt a lot?” What stories did their parents tell them I wonder? Orthodontics have come a long way from the time when getting braces was a painful, fearful, anxiety-filled experience. When it comes to the question of which type of brush to use, neither one is superior to the other in all situations. Instead, it’s always best to use whichever type of brush helps you remember to brush regularly. Try to brush at least twice a day for at least two minutes a day.

WHAT ARE INVISIBLE BRACES?

Hidden braces, also known as invisible braces or clear aligners, are a discrete alternative to traditional braces. Usually, when we think of braces, we remember our childhood and the kids with a mouth full of metal brackets and rubber bands. Because of this, many adults would rather live with crooked teeth than get braces.

HOW DO INVISIBLE BRACES WORK?

Invisible braces consist of a series of clear thermoplastic aligners that fit over your teeth. They are nearly invisible to others and are much less invasive and painful than traditional braces.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS FOR INVISIBLE BRACES?

In the first examination, your orthodontist will determine if you are eligible for invisible braces based on the condition of your teeth. If you have healthy teeth and your dentist believes you would benefit from the treatment, they will use an intraoral scanner to take a digital scan of your teeth. They will then use this scan to create a customized product that fits your teeth perfectly. With the 3D scan, you will also be able to compare your teeth before and after treatment.

Unlike traditional braces that stay on your teeth for months or years, invisible braces are custom-made, and you have to replace them every 1-3 weeks. Your orthodontist will evaluate your progress at each visit and give you a new, slightly different aligner that will continue to push your teeth into the correct position.

Most dentists recommend removing invisible braces while eating food, brushing teeth, and flossing. Apart from that, you should wear it for at least 20-22 hours a day.

WHAT IS THE LENGTH OF TREATMENT FOR INVISIBLE BRACES?

Invisible braces should start correcting your smile within six months. However, you should begin to see changes within a few weeks.

Keep in mind the length of treatment will vary based on the condition of your teeth. Here are three possible circumstances that may prolong your treatment:

TEETH CROWDING

If you have crowded teeth, meaning the spaces between your teeth are smaller than average, aligning your teeth will take more time. Essentially, crowded teeth have more distance to move than evenly spaced teeth, and therefore, the treatment can take longer. For severe cases of crowding, an orthodontist may recommend another preliminary treatment before hidden braces.

TEETH GAPPING

On the flip side, large gaps between teeth can also prolong the treatment for the same reason. Teeth gapping might be due to the large jaw bone, excessive tissue growth, or a smaller tooth compared to the tooth socket.

COMPLIANCE

It can be hard to remain committed if you don’t see immediate results. However, even if you feel frustrated, you must continue to wear your braces for at least 20-22 hours per day. Invisalign vs. Metal Braces, The traditional form of teeth realignment for decades. They have been around forever… for-ev-er!!! But now there’s a new kid on the block: Invisalign. It’s a new technology, so completely different from traditional/metal braces. But they’re braces, so let’s ask the question: What’s the difference?!?

DESIGN

Metal braces are a set of wires and bracket – all made of metal – that are permanently attached to the wearer’s teeth.

Invisalign is a series of 18 to 30 plastic trays worn for two weeks at a time.

USE

Metal braces and Invisalign are both used to realign and level the wearer’s teeth, the difference is in the application.

RULES

Metal braces come with a lot of rules. Can’t chew gum. Can’t drink soda. Cant’s eat chewie or gummy candies. You have to meticulously clean the wires and brackets after every meal so that you don’t get a build-up of old food/bacteria that could cause other oral health issues.

Invisalign vs. Metal Braces. Invisalign doesn’t have any such rules; since they are removable, you can take them off your teeth and out of your mouth when you eat or drink anything. You could still chew gum or eat gummy candies though your orthodontist might suggest you avoid it.

COMFORT

There might be a lower overall cost for metal braces, but both are equally affordable, and looking at the beneficial aesthetic of Invisalign, it’s less of an expense and much more of an investment.
