SPACERS FOR BRACES: WHAT ARE THEY AND WHAT TO EXPECT

For people with crooked or misaligned teeth, orthodontic braces are a great solution for straightening them out. And though most of us are familiar with what braces are, many don’t know that braces function properly with the help of spacers for braces.

Understanding intricacies like spacers can help you obtain a transparent picture of the procedure involved with getting braces. And that can make the whole process a little less daunting.

The main reason spacers are needed is to allow some space between the teeth. This helps the orthodontic bands to be placed on the teeth or within the space to help align crooked teeth.

WHAT DO SPACERS DO FOR YOUR TEETH?

First off, there are two different kinds of spacers, metal and rubber. The rubber spacers are small elastic loops that slide between two back teeth. Metal spacers are small metal rings that are inserted between two back teeth.

DO SPACERS CAUSE ANY PAIN?

Now, spacers for braces can cause discomfort. This is because a small object is being placed in-between the small space that connects teeth. Do not under any circumstance try and place the spacer back in place, this will just cause added pain and should be replaced by a professional.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I EAT WITH SPACERS IN PLACE?

Discomfort could start to take place, if chewy or hard foods are being consumed. However, any discomfort can be minimized by drinking cold drinks, eating ice cream, and taking over-the-counter pain-relievers as prescribed.

After the orthodontist installs your braces, you may experience some pain and soreness in your teeth and gums for a few hours following the procedure. The soreness can last up to a week and results from pressure from chewing and sometimes cuts on the tongue from running it across the braces.

Wearing Invisalign braces take 6-24 months depending on treatment complexity. You occasionally visit your dentist during the period to get aligner adjustments. After these adjustments, it’s common to experience discomfort for a few days.

CAN YOU USE ORTHODONTIC WAX FOR INVISALIGN?

Dental wax is most commonly used for metal braces as it helps protect your gums from the metal edges of your braces. However, many individuals choose to use dental wax for aligners to alleviate irritation or abrasions resulting from the tray’s surface rubbing up against your gums and tongue. Orthodontic wax is natural and safe to use as a brace barrier when wearing Invisalign.

Whether you’re using dental wax for aligners or metal braces, orthodontists recommend changing the wax every day and even sooner if it starts to detach. Keeping orthodontic wax in your mouth for more than a day increases the risk of bacteria and cavities.

Here are other ways patients wearing Invisalign for the first time can reduce irritation and discomfort.

ADVIL

Also known as Motrin or Ibuprofen, Advil is considered a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).

Advil is an over-the-counter pain reliever that is helpful in the first 12-24 hours of wearing a new set of Invisalign aligners. Advil provides relief for about 6-8 hours for traditional metal braces.

Patients experiencing pain and discomfort when changing clear aligners can use this anti-inflammatory medication to help reduce the inflammation and swelling that may happen in the gums when the Invisalign press against the teeth.

EMERY BOARD

These are small flat boards that have emery paper glued to them. They are often used to refine nails; Invisalign patients use them to smoothen the rough edges of new Invisalign.

To file the edges on your aligners, orthodontists recommend you hold the emery board at a 45-degree angle from the edge where it’s bothering and file back & forth unit it’s smooth.

BIOTENE & XYLIMENTS

Biotene is a mouth spray used to prevent tooth decay, cavities, and gum disease; Xyliments are synthetic forms of mucus secretions produced in the mouth and help relieve the pain and dryness in the throat or mouth.

Invisalign patients involved in public speaking like lectures or business meetings may need Biotene & Xyliments to moisturize the mouth from irritation.

CANKER-X

Canker sores are small shallow ulcers occurring in the mouth lining that often can get triggered by minor injuries, acid fruits, or hot spicy foods.

Canker-X is a non-prescription product with no alcohol or benzocaine that helps the mouth heal from canker sores caused by clear aligners.

Patients wearing Invisalign can use Canker-X to coat the sores preventing discomfort and irritation.

HOW DO YOU USE DENTAL WAX ON CLEAR ALIGNERS?

Dental wax typically comes from natural waxes like carnauba wax or beeswax. Some contain ingredients for flavor and texture.

When inserting wax for Invisalign braces, follow these steps:

• Wash your hands
• Brush your teeth
• Take a small piece of dental wax
• Squeeze it until it’s a small ball and flatten it.
• Then gently push the wax onto the problem area of the braces. You can use your tongue to adjust the wax.

CHEWIES FOR INVISALIGN

Invisalign chewies are devices that patients chew to close air bubbles between the clear aligners and teeth. The patient bites down on a chewie and chews for 5-10 minutes while shifting it around in the mouth to fit the aligners with the teeth.

Another alternative is a clean paper towel, which you can roll to the thickness of your pinky finger, then chew for a few minutes before disposal.

DOES ORTHODONTIC WAX DISSOLVE?

Orthodontic wax wears out over time. You can always apply another layer of dental wax if the Invisalign aligners continue to irritate your mouth. It’s also safe to swallow the wax.

CAN YOU SLEEP WITH ORTHODONTIC WAX?

You can wear orthodontic wax during sleep, more so when you face down; it’s okay if your swallow some wax as it’s non-toxic.

Dr. Yusupov has some basic recommendations for taking care of your retainers for Cedarhurst, Forest Hills and Brooklyn residents. Once you have done the hard work of straightening your teeth, the next phase of your orthodontic treatment begins:

Keeping your teeth aligned with a retainer! You don’t want anything holding you back after taking the time to get them straightened. It will allow bone tissue to rebuild around the teeth and keep the teeth from shifting when you bite, chew, swallow and speak.

Whether your removable retainer is made of acrylic or clear plastic, it will need care and protection. That is if you want to keep your teeth in the aligned position your orthodontic journey left them. If you have a fixed retainer, this is typically a metal wire bonded to the back of your front teeth that never comes off. You will be wearing your retainer at night while you sleep and need to keep it clean when it’s not in your mouth.

RETAINER CARE

Wear It As Often As Possible

This simple step can’t be overemphasized. Wearing your retainer is the only thing that will keep your teeth from shifting back into their pre-treatment, unaligned position. Whether you need to wear it all day or just at night, be sure you follow our orthodontist’s instructions.

Keep It Clean

It’s not just your pearly whites that need cleaning; your retainer needs to be germ- and bacteria-free! You can brush it with your soft-bristled toothbrush when you brush and floss your teeth. Cleaning solutions to rinse or soak the retainer can be done using a denture-cleaning tablet. If you have any questions, check with our team for specifics.

Take It Out Before Eating

You will need to wear your removable retainer as prescribed, except when you eat. Retainers are not made for chewing (unless they are permanent). This allows you to eat your favorite foods without harming the appliance and keep oral debris from hiding behind your retainer and getting stuck there.

Protect It

Keep your removable retainer in its container when it’s not in your mouth. You don’t want to lose it (that’s expensive), nor do you want to accidentally throw it away after eating out, or putting it someplace where it will pick up germs and bacteria, like letting your dog chew it.

Avoid Heat

Because of the material, an acrylic or plastic retainer can be warped or damaged by high heat. That means cleaning it with warm – not hot – water. Do not clean it in boiling water, the dishwasher, microwave, washing machine, dryer, or leave it in the car on a hot day.

Wear a Sports Guard

Don’t wear your retainer when you’re playing contact or high impact sports. Wear a sports guard to protect your teeth and oral tissues. Just be sure to put your retainer back on after playing.

Orthodontic treatment involves correcting malocclusion, which is the misalignment of a bite, incorrect spacing between teeth or crooked teeth. A good orthodontist has a depth of knowledge and experience to draw from when working with each individual and can customize treatment accordingly. A general dentist does not have the same specialized training and will refer patients to an orthodontist for such services.

There’s an expertise, knowledge base and finesse that’s necessary when aligning teeth because everyone’s biology is different. Progress has to be monitored and adjustments made as necessary.
